Curtain panels come in standard widths and lengths. On packaging, the measurements are written as width first, then length. Standard lengths include 63 inches, 84 inches, 96 inches, 108 inches and 120 inches.

Curtains should be two to two and a half times wider than the window. This is because curtains should be able to be pulled back beyond the window frame on either side to let plenty of light into the room and to exaggerate the window's proportions, but still look full when pulled across.

As experts believe, curtains should lightly touch the floor. 'I'd say they should just kiss the floor,' says Linda Hayslett of LH. Designs. 'There should be just a little space between the floor and the fabric, perhaps 1/8" to 1/4" max.

We recommend hanging most curtains at least 4-6 inches above the window frame. A general rule is two-thirds of the space above the window. To maximize the illusion of height many companies manufacture special ceiling mount drapery hardware.

For float-length drapery, measure from your rod to about ½ inch off the floor. For break-length drapes, measure from your rod to the floor and add 1 to 2 inches. For a puddle effect, measure from your rod to the floor add 3 to 6 inches.

Typically, the back layer is the light filtering, lightweight sheer, bringing natural light into the space when the front set of blackout curtains are pulled back. In other settings, this may be completely reversed to have blackouts as the base layer.

The easiest way to add length is to hang the curtain from rings instead of using the rod pocket/grommets/etc. This will drop the curtain a few inches, which is perfect if your curtains are just a tad too short.

Sheer curtains are all perfect for helping to create the illusion of more space within your bedroom. The trick is to hang the curtains from the ceiling to the floor, drawing the eye upward and along their long, flowing length, visually extending the height of the room.

Floor length drapery are basically the gold standard in drapery design and your safest bet if you're unsure. They should sit no higher than 1/2″ above the floor. They need to be level with the floor and almost touch it but not quite. It's like hovering right above the floor.

How far should a curtain rod extend past the window? Get a rod 8 to 12 inches longer than the window's width; account for at least 4 to 6 inches on either side. Also, plan to mount the curtain about 4 to 6 inches above the window frame.

Therefore by default, most customers order panels that are 1.5 times the width of their curtain rod/pole. For example, for a curtain pole/window that is 36 inches wide, two panels of 27 inches *each* would give a less than average fullness yet a nice clean look for this style.
