(AP) The PBS comedy "Flickers," an affectionately bawdy look at the British film industry before talkies, doesn't have a laugh track. So, without that incessant elbow in the ribs, how are we to know when to laugh? Easy.
For the next six Sundays on "Masterpiece Theater," whenever anybody says anything, it'll probably be funny. (IPBN will begin broadcasting "Flickers" 9 p.m. Sunday on Channel 11.) a long time since television could rouse us from the doldrums! But "Flickers" does it with cutting comedy that is both perceptive and rollicking fun. As soon as the honky-tonk piano introduces the credits, the bad memories of the past three months of programming begin to fade. After the second-rate "Nelson" and "Love in a Cold Climate," "Flickers" will put "Masterpiece Theater" back on a Tonight's television lineup I 1 Vl i i v.
i I 4 1 I 1 '7' "1 However, he meets his match in the movie's heroine, Maud. Frances de la Tour, who looks and plays comedy Like Carol Burnett, breathes dignity and compassion into Maud. As plain as toast, Maud has philosophically come to terms with what she calls her "apparent drift into spinsterhood." Then the upright Maud has the misfortune to become pregnant by an egotistical cad, and her life is put on a collision course with Arnie. He needs her family fortune for his films; she needs his name to give her baby respectability. It's a marriage of reservations that turns into a warm, loving relationship.
She admires his drive, ambition and ability to turn chaos into chaos. He appreciates her kindness, patience and belief in him. The odd couple genuinely grow to like and love each other, seeing their contract as their last shot at happiness and family roots. As Arnie endeavors to keep his film business afloat, he's aided and abetted by a menagerie of zany characters who are guaranteed to ward off the Sunday night blues: a pint-sized comedian, an absent-minded writer who wheezes his way through everything verbal, and a daffily pretentious director. Who needs laugh tracks? "Flickers" is the real thing.
The opening sequence immediately sets the tone. A silent movie shows a train cascading into the water. But, before you begin deciphering the device behind this cinematic stunt, the train is seen chugging along inside what looks remarkably like a goldfish bowl. The man showing the movie is Arhie Cole before he had bigger dreams and began making movies. The primitive, pre-World War I film industry needed some spunk and innovation, when coarse Arnie came to knock down the door.
Played with roguish charm and full speed ahead by Bob Hoskins, Arnie doesn't jilt anybody who really doesn't deserve it. He's Barnum with a bowler, shifty but not shiftless. He adheres to his own moral code, never orchestrating a flim-flam that he wouldn't do himself. It's just that the hustling Arnie will try anything. He was the first cinematographer to show pictures of King Edward's funeral.
Charges that the funeral was actually Queen Victoria's didn't faze him. Edward was at that one, too, Arnie said. Arnie doesn't untarnish the seedling film industry's seedy reputation, but he sure makes it entertaining. Says Arnie's lackey, a generally tipsy but loyal Welshman: "Arnie could talk his way out of anything but a coffin." Ch. 2 ESPN (cable) Ch.

I One of the ingredients that makes "Barney Miller" so enjoyable is 'that most of the situations are taken from real-life police cases. In their i low-key manner, Barney and his men deal with the ironies of life, Most tare funny. Some are sad. It is one of those series that make you laugh out loud something that doesn't happen on TV too often.
Another key ingredient is the cast. It is the perfect ensemble the 'unflappable Captain Miller (Hal Linden), the diligent Levitt (Ron "Carey), the wisecracking Dietrich (Steve Landesberg), the dapper Harris )(Ron Glass), the maudlin Luger (James Gregory) and the sensitive Wojo '(Max Gail). Earlier characters in the cast are honored in flashbacks 'tonight Fish (Abe Vigoda), Chano (Gregory Sierra) and my favorite 'character, Yemana (the late Jack Soo). i Tonight's closer, the final part of a three-part episode, chronicles the 'detectives' last day at the precinct house. Their new assignments aren't released until late in the day then there is time only for sad farewells.
f'Barney Miller" goes out in the same classy style that has marked the series for the past 7 years. But you have not seen the last of "Barney Miller."
