Cancer is a disease that can impact anyone, but it does not impact everyone equally. According to the American Cancer Society, Black and other racial and ethnic minority groups, low income, underinsured, or uninsured individuals as well as those living in rural areas, often face greater obstacles to preventing, treating and surviving cancer. Mariam F. Eskander, MD, MPH, surgical oncologist in the Gastrointestinal Oncology Program at Rutgers Cancer Institute and affiliated with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, offers insight and tips for minority individuals navigating a cancer diagnosis and how we can all work together to mitigate cancer disparities: https://lnkd.in/gFmbw8dNDr. Eskander’s clinical interests include pancreatic tumors, liver tumors including colorectal liver metastasis, bile duct cancer, gallbladder cancer, gastric tumors, colorectal cancer, and minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) surgery. A very quick and noninvasive Coronary Calcium Scoring test, using a CT scan, detected a calcium build-up in Dan Harten’s coronary arteries. This simple test may have saved his life.Dan Harten of Manchester visited Community Medical Center’s (CMC) Cardiac Imaging Center in Whiting with a prescription from his physician for a Coronary Calcium Scoring test. He never suspected that the test score would indicate a heavy plaque build-up in his coronary arteries. This, along with a significant family history of heart disease, also a personal history of smoking and diabetes, would lead him to undergo angioplasty at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) in New Brunswick. Dan’s incredible team of specialists included RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group providers, Vicente Magsino, MD, Internal Medicine, who recommended the closer look into Dan’s heart, as well as Cardiologist, Nihir Shah, MD, and Ramzan Zakir, Interventional Cardiologist, who performed an angiogram at RWJUH, inserting three stents to enable oxygen-rich blood to supply his heart.https://lnkd.in/eV2-Zug2Dr. Magsino, affiliated with Community Medical Center-Toms River, NJ and Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and has over 15 years of practice experience in Internal Medicine. We are often advised that we need to take 10,000 steps a day, however, the latest science suggests, anywhere from 7,000 to 8,000 steps can be just enough to give you those same benefits that walking 10,000 steps a day does!Cardiologist, Jeffrey Lander, MD, FACC, Co-Director of Sports Cardiology for RWJBarnabas Health and Medical Director of the Cardiac Care Unit at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center explains why: https://lnkd.in/eCsy4tBHDr. Lander strives to ensure each of his patients are treated individually, combining the most up to date cardiac practices with a personal touch. His clinical interests include cardiovascular disease, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, vascular ultrasound, and sports cardiology.Dr. Lander’s office is located at 741 Northfield Ave., Suite 205, West Orange, NJ. For more information or to make an appointment, please call (973) 467-1544.
